A New Zealand icon, Sir Edmund Hillary, has today died at the age of 88. Best known for his conquest of Mt Everest in 1953, Sir Ed was the most well-known and admired Kiwi of our time. You can read more about his life and work
here. He epitomised the quintessential "ordinary Kiwi bloke" and is immortalised on our $5 note.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear this! I JUST saw a picture of him in the Peter Jackson autobiography with some of the cast & crew of LOTR.
Me too. I hadn't heard about this until I read your blog Shirley. There has always been a certain mystique about Everest and mountaineering and it fascinates me. I am sorry to hear of this great man's passing.
