Neat Shirley! Did you try just loosening the top tension? I know on both those machines I've had students go all the way down to zero to be able to free motion well.
BOTH my machines (Janome 6500 and Pfaff 6270) are giving me tension problems. However, I've managed to do some stitching on the Red Man.
